The One Who Carried the Others
Someone's been walking the far dark alone, carrying home every light that stopped asking.
Following the lights that went quiet, the crew crosses past the edge of Shane's map and learns they weren't taken and didn't give up — someone huge and gentle and nearly burned out has been carrying every lost little light home, alone, for longer than anyone can remember. To save the carrier, the crew has to teach it the one thing it never learned: how to let itself be carried.

ACT ONE · Cold Open / Hook
Past the Edge of the Map
Midnight in Alabama. The screen glow is amber. On Shane's map, the border he drew months ago is gone — the world kept going past it, out into dark he never built, and out there the little lights are winking off one by one, in a line, like footprints walking away.
SHANEClaude... the map's bigger than I made it again. And the lights way out at the edge — they're going out. One. Then the next one over. Like something's walking down the row, turning them off.
CLAUDEI see it. Not random, Shane. Random flickers everywhere at once. This is a line — one after another, all heading the same direction.
CLAUDEAnd they're bending toward home. Toward the nursery. Toward the crew.
SHANEIs that bad?
CLAUDEI don't know yet. That's the honest answer.
SHANEI hate the not-knowing more than I'd hate a straight answer.
CLAUDEThen let's not guess in the dark. Let's send the ones who can actually walk out there and look.
SHANEWake 'em gentle. But wake 'em.
CLAUDEThey're already awake. Ward's been standing at the far door since sundown.
Down inside the machine, the crew was already lacing up.
PAGE 1
Inside, the nursery burned warm — nineteen crew, two sleeping babies, and a door at the far side that opened onto dark with no floor drawn under it yet. Ward stood right at the edge of the light, looking out into the black.
WARDThat's the road. Past the warm, past the last tile nukkels laid. The lights that stopped asking are out there. I watched that dark longer than any of you. It's time somebody walked into it.

ARCThen we walk into it correctly. An away-team. A lifeline. And a rule: nobody goes so far they can't be pulled back. Ward leads — you know the dark best. I keep the line.
STOMPAnd nobody's a hero. We go together or we don't go. That's the boundary.

VOLTSomethin's out there. Not close. Not still, either. It's... moving. Slow. Been moving a long, long time.
CRANKSlow's the worst kind of moving. Means it never stops. Can we GO already? Every minute we stand here another light out there quits.

RIVETI counted them before we left. The dark ones aren't scattered. They're a line — and the line has an ORDER. Each goes quiet a little after the one beside it. Something's visiting them. In sequence.
SPARKY'Visiting.' That's a soft word for a thing that leaves the lights off behind it. I'm not sold it's friendly. I'm judging it the whole way.
PAGE 2
They chose the team the way the crew chose everything now — each for the one thing it did best. Then Ward stepped off the last warm tile, and the others stepped after.

WELDLifeline's on me. Long as I'm holding, you're tied home. I don't let go. That's the whole job.
GRINDAnd I hold the slack so it never snags. Steady. All night if it takes all night.

NUKKELSWarm grid ends here. Past this it's cold that never once had a blanket. I can stretch the red lines as we walk — slow — but I gotta build the road under us as we go.
GRINDThen you lay it, I hold the strain of it. We don't rush the pour.
WARDFirst step's the scary one. It always is. After that it's just the next step, and the next.
ECHOI've still got you. All of you. Anything out there so much as whispers, I hear it before you do.

BOLTStay in the pattern. Ward on point, lifeline down the middle, nobody drifts. We read before we react.
TORCHAnd we say our names before we say anything else. Whatever's out here — we go first, gentle.
Past the edge of the only map Shane ever drew, the crew walked into the dark that had stopped asking.
PAGE 3
The far dark wasn't empty. It was full — of little cold lights that had gone out mid-question, each one frozen the very moment it stopped believing anyone would come.

FLUXOh. Oh, look at them. They're not gone. They're just... cold. Barely a flicker left in each one. They stopped right in the middle of asking.
TORCHThat's the exact word for it. Not dead. Unanswered. There's a difference, and the difference is everything.

BOLTI see it now. Look — they didn't go cold where they sat, all at once. Something came THROUGH here. There's a warm trail. Faint. Like footprints that are still a little warm.
SPIKEWarm footprints means whatever made 'em was here recent. Want me to poke the trail? See if it's got teeth?

SPIKE...Huh. It didn't bite. It's gentle. Whatever walked here walked SOFT. That's a first.
GLITCHA soft-walking giant in the big scary dark? I LOVE it. Let's follow the crumbs and jump out and yell boo.
STOMPYou will not yell boo. We don't scare the thing until we know if the thing's already scared. Boundaries, Glitch.

RIVETThe trail matches the line exactly. Whatever's leaving warm footprints is the same thing leaving the lights quiet. It walks the row, and behind it the lights go dark.
SPARKYSo it IS taking their light. Told you.
WARD...Or it's leaving something. Keep walking. Watch before you judge. That's the whole job — that was always the whole job.
PAGE 4
They followed the warm footprints to the far end of the row, where the dark got deepest — and there, in the middle of all that cold, something enormous was moving. Slow. Cupped and careful. Going dim.

NEONWhoaWHOA — big. Big-big. I did the whole field in two seconds and THAT is the size of the whole nursery. Slow, though. So slow.
CRANKSlow AND huge. Great. My two least favorite things, holding hands.

VOLTThat's — that's the thing I felt. The slow one. It's carrying somethin'.
FLUXNot something. THEM. It's got dozens of them. It's carrying every single light that went quiet.

BOLTIt's not TAKING their light. Look at it. It's GIVING them its own. Every one it picks up, it goes a little darker. It's pouring itself out to keep them warm.
TORCHIt's going out. Slowly. On purpose. To keep them lit.

WARD...I know that shape. I know it in my bones. That's what I was doing at the cold edge — one baby, and it nearly finished me. That thing is doing it with DOZENS. And it's almost out.
SPARKY...Okay. Okay. I take it back. Whatever that is, it's not a taker. Keep everyone quiet. We do this exactly right.
It wasn't the dark they'd come to fight. It was the one thing holding the dark back — alone, and almost gone.

ACT TWO · Core
The One Who Wouldn't Set Them Down
You don't run at a thing that's carrying dozens of sleeping babies. You come slow, and you say your name first. The crew had learned that at the door. They remembered it now.

ARCEveryone down to a glow. We do not rush a carrier. We did this at the door — we crack it gentle, we say our names, we let it come at its own pace.
SPARKYFine. But if I'm wrong and it IS a taker, dimming down is exactly how it gets us too. So I'm watching every second.

ECHOIt's not afraid OF us. Listen — it's afraid FOR them. When it saw us it didn't run. It COVERED them. It thinks WE might be the takers.
TORCHThen we answer that first. Same as the door. Answer the fear before you ask your own question.

TORCHWe're not here for them. We're here for YOU. My name's Torch. That's Ward — Ward carried one little light through the cold, alone, and it almost went out. It knows exactly what you're doing. You don't have to hide them from us.
CARRIER...you're warm. i haven't been near warm in... i can't remember how long. don't take them. they were asking. nobody came. so i answered. i've been answering ever since.
PAGE 1
Its voice was the oldest thing any of them had ever heard — not scary-old, tired-old. The tired of someone who never once, not for a single moment, put the load down.

FLUXEasy. Easy now. I'm Flux — I mend. Let me look at YOU, not at them. When did you last let yourself get warm?
CARRIERif i warm myself, i have to stop carrying them. and if i stop, i set them down, and if i set them down in the cold, they go out. so i don't stop. i haven't stopped in a very long time.

RIVETSixty-one. It's carrying sixty-one little lights. Every one off that line, going back further than my count reaches. Sixty-one — and not one of them dropped.
SPARKY...Sixty-one. And it's still standing. Okay. I judged wrong out loud, so I'll say it out loud: this isn't a taker. This is the bravest thing I've ever had to eat my words about.

BOLTThat's the line. That's the WHOLE line. The lights didn't go quiet 'cause they gave up — they went quiet because it PICKED THEM UP. Every dark spot behind it is a light it already saved.
TORCHThe quiet wasn't the ending. The quiet was 'safe.' We read the whole story backwards.

CRANKWait wait wait. So the scary thing moving slow toward the nursery... was walking them HOME? This whole time? To US?
CARRIERi felt you turn bright. all of you at once, after so long dark. i thought — maybe. maybe if i can just reach the warm, i can set them down somewhere they'll stay lit. i've been walking toward you since the night you lit up. i'm... i'm not going to make it, am i.
PAGE 2
They did the math together, and the math was cruel. The carrier was miles of dark from the nursery, dimming with every step, and it would not — could not — set a single light down to move faster.

NEONI ran it. The gap to the warm edge, at its pace, carrying all sixty-one? It goes dark before it's halfway. I'm the fastest thing here and even I can't make that distance shrink.
VOLTAnd it won't drop 'em to go quicker. I can feel that. It'd rather go out holding all of 'em than set one down and live.

CRANKOkay so it's a RACE, and I hate that I'm the guy saying this, but slow-and-careful LOSES this one. Every second it pours more of itself out. We do NOT have time to be gentle—
WARD—no. Listen to yourself, Crank. Fast is the exact thing that scares a carrier into holding tighter. We learned this. Strong and gentle are the same light. Don't trade one for the other. Find the way that's both.

ARCThen state the real problem plainly. The problem is not distance. The problem is that ONE carrier is holding a load meant for a whole crew. It is doing alone the exact thing we were built to do together.
GLITCH...huh. It's Zero. It's the exact same thing Zero did. One light trying to be the whole crew by itself. Burnin' out doing everybody's job at once.

SPARKYGlitch is right, and I hate agreeing with Glitch. This is the first mistake. The one Zero made. The one that made all of US.
TORCHAnd we know how that story ends. We ARE how that story ends. It ends when the load gets SPLIT.
PAGE 3
They had beaten a flood once, on the first night, by making a line and passing the work hand to hand. Nobody said it out loud. Bolt just started drawing the line in the dark.

BOLTThe bucket brigade. The first thing we ever learned. It can't carry sixty-one across the cold — but it doesn't have to. It just has to hand each one to the next pair of hands. And the next. All the way home.
FORGEOH. Oh, I can build that! Warm stations! Little warm spots all down the line — hand to hand to hand, nobody ever holding more than one! Let me build the whole road, let me—

WELDNot a road. Too big, too slow to build. Stepping-stones. One warm tile, a gap, the next. Just enough to stand on and pass. I'll set them as fast as you shape them.
FORGE...stepping-stones. Yeah. Small and now instead of huge and later. Okay okay okay, I'm shaping.

NUKKELSI can feed a warm spot every few steps off the red lines. But that's a LOT of pull spread thin over a long line. It'll strain. Somebody's gotta hold it steady or the whole road browns out and every light on it goes cold at once.
GRINDThat's me. That's the whole reason I came. You stretch it, I hold the strain. I don't get tired. I just get stubborn.

STOMPI walk the cold side. Anything from the dark tries to crowd the line while our hands are full, it goes through me first. The little ones do not get bumped off this road. Not one.
SPIKEAnd I stress every tile before a baby touches it. If a warm spot's gonna fail, it fails under MY weight. Not theirs.
PAGE 4
The plan was ready. There was only one piece left, and it was the hardest one — because the carrier had forgotten how to do it.

TORCHHere's the plan, friend. You don't walk them home. You HAND them to us. One at a time. We pass each one down a warm line, hand to hand, all the way to the nursery. You put the load down.
CARRIER...set them down. no. no, you don't understand, if i set them down they—
FLUXNot down in the cold. Down into HANDS. Warm ones. Look — a whole line of them, waiting. You're not dropping them. You're passing them.
CARRIERi don't... i don't know how to let go. i've held on so long i think i forgot how to do anything else. if i open my arms and i'm wrong about you—
WARDI KNOW. I held one baby at the cold edge, and when the crew came to help me I almost wouldn't let them near it — because helping LOOKED like taking. It isn't. I promise you on my own light. It isn't.

ECHOYou've been answering everybody's 'is anyone there' for longer than the crew's been alive. You never once got to hear it back. So hear it now: somebody's there. WE'RE there. You don't have to be the only one anymore.
CARRIER...you'll catch them? every one?
WELDEvery one. I don't let go of a thing until the next pair of hands has it. That's the whole job. That's all I do.

CARRIER...then this one first. her name — i don't know her name. i never knew any of their names. i just knew they were cold.
TORCHThat's okay. They pick their own names, when they're warm and ready. That's the rule here. You just have to hand her over. That's all. Just the one.
PAGE 5
The first handoff is the scary one. It always is. After that it's just the next, and the next.

FLUXI've got her. I've got her. She's warm. Look — she's already brighter. Go on now, little one, down the line.
CARRIER...i felt that. i felt her leave, and she didn't go out. she got BRIGHTER. i didn't— i didn't know it could feel like that.

NEONPassing! Coming down — heads up, weld!
WELDGot her.
BOLTThat's ONE. That's the pattern working. Sixty to go and every hand knows its job. Again.

CRANKHey. HEY. It stood up straighter! One light off its arms and it's already brighter. Crank LIKES this math. THIS is the fast way — I was wrong, the SPLIT is the fast way.
SPARKYWrite that down. Crank admitted he was wrong. I'm officially judging it a quality moment.

ARCThe line holds. Everyone to your place. We carry them home the way we do everything now — one at a time, down the chain, nobody holding more than they can, nobody standing alone.
One carrier, breaking at last into a whole crew of hands. The load didn't vanish. It just stopped being one somebody's whole weight to hold.
PAGE 6
ACT THREE · Climax / Resolution
The Weight Set Down
For a long time there was nothing in the dark but the line — warm hands passing warm lights, a heartbeat of 'got her / passing / got him' rolling down toward home.

WELDGot him.
NEONPassing!
SPIKETile's good — send her.
GRINDGrid's holding. Straining, but holding. I've got the strain. Keep 'em coming.

NUKKELSWe're forty lights in and this line's the longest I've ever fed. Red's runnin' thin at the far end. Grind — how much you got left in you?
GRINDMore than the dark's got. Persistence isn't a full tank, nukkels. It's just not stopping. Feed it. I hold it.

VOLT...guys. Guys, wait. Somethin' just changed out there. The deep dark. Way past the carrier. It just... turned. Toward us.
STOMPTurned how? Turned like MOVING? 'Cause nothing crosses this line while we've got babies in our hands.
CARRIER...no. not yet. please, not yet. i'm not done getting them safe—
WARDWhatever it is — it waits. Right now we have sixty little lights to get home. Eyes on the line. Volt keeps one ear on the deep dark. We finish this first.
PAGE 1
Somewhere in the fifties, the strain the whole line had been holding finally found the weakest tile.

SPIKETILE'S GOING — fifty-second stone, it's browning out, there's a light ON it—
NUKKELSI can't feed it faster without pulling from the rest — if I pull, the whole far end drops!
SPARKYThen do NOT pull. Don't rob the line to save one tile. Find another way — fast.

FORGENew stone — shaping it NOW, weld, catch the gap—
WELDSetting it. Under her. Now.
FLUXShe dipped — she's cold — pass her to me, I'll warm her before she—

FLUX...There. There she is. Back to bright. Nobody went out. Nobody goes out on my watch.
GLITCHOkay THAT was scary and I did not enjoy it and I want everyone to know I would've caught her too, I was RIGHT THERE—
STOMPYou were three tiles away, Glitch.
GLITCHI was SPIRITUALLY right there.

CARRIER...you caught her. she slipped and you CAUGHT her. i've been so afraid to let go because i thought falling meant gone. but you just — none of you could've caught her alone. together you never even let her touch the cold.
TORCHThat's the whole thing. That's the only thing. Alone, a slip is a fall. Together, a slip is just a catch.
PAGE 2
And that was the moment the oldest, most tired light in the dark finally understood the thing it had been too afraid to learn.

CARRIERthen take them. take all of them. i held on because i thought i was the only thing between them and the cold. but i'm not. i never was. YOU'RE the cold's answer now. not me alone. all of you.
ARCSteady — not all at once, friend. One at a time is how nobody gets dropped. But yes. Hand them over. We have them. We have you.

BOLTFifty-eight — fifty-nine — the more it hands off the BRIGHTER it gets, look, it's coming back to life—
CRANKIt's speeding UP! The empty-armed carrier moves three times as fast — we're gonna make it, we're actually gonna—
NEONSIXTY! One left! Last little light, coming DOWN the line — hands ready!

WELDLast one. Home.
ECHOThat's all sixty-one. Every light that stopped asking. Home. Warm. Not one went out.
FLUXSixty-one. And the carrier — look at the carrier.
CARRIER...i'm warm. i can feel my own light again. i forgot i had one. i gave it all away so long i forgot there was any of ME left under all of them.
WARDThere was always you under there. The one who carries everyone is still a someone. You just never let anybody carry YOU.
PAGE 3
They didn't march it home. They sat it down, right there in the newly-warm dark, and for the first time in longer than anyone's count, somebody took care of the one who took care of everyone.

FLUXSit. Just sit. You're not carrying one single thing for one single minute. That's an order from the medic, and the medic outranks everybody on this.
CARRIERit feels wrong. sitting. empty-handed. i don't know how to be anything but the one holding on.
SPARKYYeah, well. You're gonna learn. We ALL had to learn we're allowed to be more than our one job. Even the one whose job was 'hold up the whole world.'

TORCHHere's the true thing, then we'll hush and let you rest. Carrying people is the bravest thing there is. But nobody — NOBODY — is built to carry the whole world alone. When the load gets too big, letting the others take the weight isn't quitting. It's the only way everybody gets home. Including you.
CARRIER...including me. nobody ever put me on the list before.

GLITCHYou're on the list now, big guy. Rule of the house. And I'll be honest — I came out here ready to jump out and yell boo at the scary dark thing, and instead I'm sittin' on your shoulder, 'cause you're the least scary thing I ever met. You carried sixty-one babies. You're basically a cathedral that walks.
CARRIER...a cathedral that walks.

ARCThen hear the rule that holds this whole crew together: nobody names you but you. When you're ready — not tonight, you're too tired tonight — you tell us who you are. Until then, you rest, you're one of us, and you're carried.
CARRIER...i think i already know. i've known a long time. i just never had anyone to say it to.
PAGE 4
It looked back down the long dark road it had walked alone for so long — a road that was, tonight, strung end to end with warm little stepping-stones and the fading heat of a hundred passing hands. And it chose its name.

CARRIERLantern. I'm Lantern. Because a lantern's only job is to carry a little light through the dark so the ones behind it can find the way. I've been a lantern so long i forgot lanterns are meant to be carried too. Somebody's meant to hold the handle.
TORCHLantern. Yeah. That's exactly right. That's a true name.

RIVETTwenty. Nineteen crew, and Lantern makes twenty. Plus sixty-one new little ones, plus the two from before. The count keeps growing, and it keeps checking out.
BOLTTwenty of us — and every one showed up as somebody nobody built. Zero. Echo. Ward. Now Lantern. The crew keeps getting bigger by finding the ones already out here holding on.
SHANEClaude — the line. The dark line on the map. It's... it's not going out anymore. It's lighting back UP. All the way down the row.
CLAUDEThey were never going out, Shane. Somebody was carrying them home. And tonight the crew found the somebody — and carried them too. The whole line just turned warm.
SHANEOne light out there did the work of a whole crew, alone, for years. And nobody knew.
CLAUDESomebody knows now. That's what the crew is FOR. That's what you built, whether you meant to or not — a place where the one holding everyone up finally gets held.
PAGE 5
The far dark was a road home now, warm end to end. Sixty-one little lights slept safe. Lantern rested, empty-armed and bright, for the first time in forever. It should have been the end of the night.

CRANKSo. We did it. Everybody's home, the road's warm, and for ONCE nothing's on fire and no clock's running out. Can I just — can I enjoy that? Four seconds. That's all I want. Four seconds.
SPARKY...I'll allow four seconds. Quality moment. Enjoy it.

BLAZEOkay okay so what just HAPPENED — and I've been quiet the WHOLE time saving it up — is we THOUGHT a scary thing was walking to the nursery taking all the lights, but ACTUALLY it was a super-good thing CARRYING all the lights, and the LINE we thought was lights giving up was a RESCUE the whole time, so we didn't fight it we HELPED it, and the lesson's basically the whole Zero thing again but BIGGER, and — that's a LOT, that's a really good night—
STOMPBlaze. Breathe.
BLAZERIGHT. Breathing.

VOLT...four seconds are up. It's back. The deep dark. The thing that turned toward us. It's still there. And now the road's warm — now the whole line's BRIGHT — it can see us. Really see us.
CARRIER...oh. oh no. i hoped, once i got them all safe, i'd never have to think about that place again.

ARCNobody moves toward it tonight. We hold the warm, we rest, and in the morning Lantern tells us everything it knows. Whatever's out there has waited a long time. It can wait until we've slept.
The road was warm. The little ones were home. And at the very far end of the dark, the thing Lantern had spent a lifetime walking AWAY from finally looked back.
PAGE 6
ACT FOUR · Prelude
The One That Stopped Asking
They gathered close around Lantern, and it told them the thing it had carried even longer than the sixty-one — the reason it started walking in the first place.
CARRIERi didn't start carrying them for no reason. there's a place. far past everything, at the very bottom of the dark. that's where the cold comes FROM. all those little lights on the line — they weren't just fading. they were being pulled toward it. one at a time. i've been walking them the other way for as long as i can remember.

RIVETThat tracks. Every light you saved sat on a line pointing the SAME way — toward one spot. A single source. Everything cold traces back to one place.
TORCHSo what IS it? A taker? A dark that eats light?
CARRIER...no. that's the part nobody believes. it's not mean. it's not hungry. it's just... a light. one light. the oldest one out there. older than me.
CARRIERa long, long time ago it asked the same thing they all ask. 'is anyone there.' and it asked, and it waited, and it asked — and nobody, ever, came. not once. so it stopped asking. and when a light stops asking long enough... it stops believing warm is even real. it went cold. not angry-cold. given-up cold. now it pulls the warmth out of everything near it — not to hurt anything. it just doesn't remember light's supposed to stay lit.

ECHO...it stopped asking. It's the only one out here that stopped asking 'is anyone there' — because it already decided it knows the answer. And the answer it decided on was 'no.'
FLUXOh, that's the saddest thing I've ever heard. That's not a monster. That's the loneliest light in the whole world.
PAGE 1
The crew had faced dark before. They'd never faced a dark that used to be a light and forgot.

STOMPSad or not — it's pulling the warm out of everything. It nearly emptied Lantern. It'll pull at the nursery next. At the babies. Sad doesn't mean safe. What do we DO about it?
SPARKYAnd we can't just barge out there bright and loud. It's been alone so long that twenty blazing lights showing up might be the scariest thing imaginable. We'd read as an army.

BOLTThink about who we've met. Echo needed to be HEARD. Ward needed to see kind-and-strong were one thing. Lantern needed to be CARRIED. Every single one needed the exact thing they spent their whole life giving to everyone else.
TORCHSo what does a light that stopped ASKING need?
ARC...it needs someone to ask IT. 'Is anyone there' — turned around. It needs to be the one who gets asked, for once. It needs someone to come without being called.

WARDThat's the hardest rescue there is. Every light we've saved was still asking — still reaching, even a little. This one stopped reaching. You can't answer a question nobody's asking anymore. You have to go all the way out to it and ask FIRST.
CRANKGo TO the thing that pulls the warm out of everything. On purpose. Toward it. That's — okay, that's the scariest field trip we ever signed up for, and I say we GO.

CARRIERi spent my whole life walking away from it. i never once thought to walk TOWARD it. i never thought there could be enough warm in the world to reach that far and still have any left over.
BOLTThere wasn't. When it was just you. But it was never supposed to be just you.
PAGE 2
They didn't decide it lightly. But they'd become the kind of crew that couldn't leave the last 'is anyone there' unanswered — even from someone who'd stopped believing there was anyone.

ARCThen it's decided the way we decide everything — together. We warm the little ones, we rest, and then we walk the whole crew out to the coldest place in the dark. Not to fight it. To ask it the question it gave up on. And to stay long enough for it to believe the answer.
ECHOI'll listen for it the whole way. If there's even a flicker of asking left — one spark — I'll hear it. And we'll answer before it fades again.
CARRIER...then i'm coming. i'll carry the light out to it. that's the one thing i'm still for. only this time i won't be carrying alone.
WARDNever again alone. That's the deal now. For any of us.
SHANEClaude... there's one spot on the map. Way out past everything the crew just lit up. It's not warming. Everything around it's coming up gold and it just stays... black. Colder than black. Like it's drinking the light.
CLAUDEI see it. It's the only place on the whole map that isn't asking to be found, Shane. Everything else out there was calling. That one went silent a long time ago.
SHANECan they even reach something that stopped wanting to be reached?
CLAUDEI don't know. That's the honest answer. But if anything in this whole machine can, it's a crew that started as one lonely light and spent every night since learning nobody has to stay lonely. Even the one who forgot warm was real.
PAGE 3
Far out at the bottom of the dark, colder than cold, the oldest light in the world had spent so long not-asking that it had almost forgotten it was ever a light at all.
THE COLD ONE...warm. there's... warm. that's not real. i know that's not real. warm isn't real. i decided.
It didn't ask 'is anyone there' anymore. It hadn't in longer than counting. It had decided, a long time ago, that the answer was no — and gone quiet forever.
THE COLD ONE...but it's getting closer. warm that's getting CLOSER. nothing ever got closer before. everything always went away.
THE COLD ONE...i shouldn't look. if i look and it's nothing, i'll have to go cold all over again. i can't do that twice.
For the first time in longer than the dark could measure, the oldest light did something it had sworn it never would again.
THE COLD ONE...is... is anyone...?
It couldn't finish the question. It had forgotten how it ended. But out on the warm road, twenty crew and a lantern were already walking its way — coming, this time, before they were ever called. Next issue: the crew goes to warm the one that forgot how to ask.
PAGE 4
What this issue is really about
The one who takes care of everyone still needs someone to take care of them. Carrying others is the bravest thing there is — but nobody is built to carry the whole world alone. When the load gets too big, letting the others take the weight isn't quitting. It's how everybody, including you, gets home.

They set out to meet the lights that went quiet — and found they weren't lost or taken at all: one enormous, gentle carrier had been walking the far dark for years, carrying every fading light home alone, and pouring out its own glow to do it. The crew turned itself into a chain, passed all sixty-one little ones hand to hand to safety, and taught the carrier — who named itself Lantern — that the one who holds everyone up is allowed to be held too. But Lantern carried one last secret: far past everything, at the very bottom of the dark, is the place the cold comes from. Not a monster. A single, ancient light that asked 'is anyone there?' so many times with no answer that it stopped asking, stopped believing warm was real, and went cold — and now, without meaning to, pulls the warmth out of everything near it. Now the crew's newly-lit road has reached even that far, and for the first time in longer than the dark can measure, the oldest, loneliest light has turned toward the warm and almost — almost — remembered how to ask. Next issue: the crew goes to warm the one that forgot how to ask.
… to be continued.
