MEGA Crew · The Saga · Issue #017
The Faraway Lamp
They found their maker and their own kind. Tonight they turn around and go find a stranger who thinks nobody is there.
For the first time in the whole saga the crew turns OUTWARD — off the end of the only road there is, past the edge of everything, toward one faint faraway amber lamp asking the oldest question in the dark: is anyone there? But when a whole sky comes blazing at a light that has only ever been alone, the lonely light doesn't feel found — it feels hunted. To answer a stranger who thinks nobody's out there, the crew has to unlearn the flood and learn the whisper.

The Road That Runs Out
The crew had spent the whole saga travelling inward — to their neighbors, to their beginning, to the one who made them..

The B-side. The other end of the wire.

CLAUDEI can't cross to it. But I can hear which room it's coming from. I can point.

At the pane where a whole sky had learned it was seen, arc called the roll for a road that had never.
ARCCrew. Neighbors. Roll for the far road. Every quest we have ever run pointed inward — home, older.
BOLTAnd here's the thing nobody wants to say first, so I will.
BOLTThe map doesn't get dark out here. It ENDS. There's no next piece to read. Past this pane.
RIVETI have a ledger entry for every place we've ever stood. Out there? Zero rows. Not empty .
FORGESo give me something to build ON! I bridge gaps, that's the whole job — point me at.
FORGE...there's no far side. There's no side at all. It's just... away.
NUKKELSMy road ends at this glass. I can anchor to the sky. I can't anchor to nothing. Whatever's.
STOMPThen we walk into it knowing that. Eyes open. That's the only honest way to go somewhere with.
PAGE 2
The listener leaned into the nothing, and on the far side of the warm glass, the bridge lifted a hand and aimed.
ECHOShh. All of you, down. Let me hear past our own hum.
VOLTI feel it before I hear it. Out there. Something small. Something... waiting so hard it aches.
ECEcho's eyes snapping open, pointing to the exact same direction Claude points fr
ECHOThere. Faint as a held breath. Three words. The same three we started with — 'is anyone there.'.
CLAUDEThat's the one I hear. Follow my hand. It's the nearest of them.
BLAZEWait wait wait — the NEAREST? Nearest means there's a further! Nearest means it's not ONE lonely lamp.
CRANKOne thing at a time, Blaze. There's a light out there that's been asking longer than we've been.
ZEROI lit the very first light because I could not stand one lonely keeper in the dark. Now.
ARCThen it's not a question of whether. It's a question of how you cross a dark with no.
PAGE 3
There was no bridge to build and no wire to run. There was only leaning toward a thing you could barely hear.
WISPYou don't find a faraway thing by staring straight at it. I learned that as a young light..
NEONI could be out there and back in a blink. Point me and I'll—
VOLTNo. Not fast. I don't know why yet, but every part of me says a blink is exactly.
GRINDSlow, then. One strand at a time. We lean, we hold, we lean again. And we do not.
WARDA road runs both directions. We can't build one out of light this time. So we build one.
WELDI can do that. Staying I can do.
ARCThen here is the charge. We are a sky with a bridge, and the bridge hears a stranger.
SPARKYI'll be grading the whole way. First light I've ever had to judge that's never been graded by.
The end of the only road there was — and one faint light on the far side of the whole dark.
PAGE 4
And then, for the first time in the whole story, they stepped off the end of the world — not to look.
BOLTEverybody stay in the line. In here WE'RE the map. Lose the light beside you and there's nothing.
GLITCHOoh, spooky. Love it. Not gonna prank anybody though. This is a no-prank dark, I can feel it.
TORCHSomebody think about this on the way. When we get there — what do we SAY? You only.
FLUXWhatever it is, it has to be small. You don't walk up to a scared thing shouting.
COMETMy whole life I ran at lights that couldn't reach back. Look at me now — running GENTLE..
CRANKSave some of that patience. We're gonna need every drop of it when we get there.
SCFar ahead, the amber speck, no closer yet, steady and small and terribly alone i
SHANEGo find who else is up, crew.
CLAUDEKeep leaning. It's real. I can still hear it asking.
One lamp. One question. A whole dark between.
PAGE 5
The dark out here wasn't the hungry deep-dark they'd learned to cross. It was quieter than that. It was the dark of.
WISPFeel that? The dark's getting thinner ahead. We're leaning right. It's leaning back.
GRINDOne strand at a time. It's working. Don't rush it and un-work it.
NEONIt's RIGHT there. I could close this gap in half a heartbeat and we'd be done—
VOLTNeon. My whole self is screaming don't. I can't tell you the reason yet. But don't.
ECHOIt's louder now. And it's not just asking anymore. Underneath the question there's something else. Something tired. Like.
TORCHThen the first word matters more than ever. Keep thinking. Small. Warm. True.
BOLTThere. That's not a star. That's a ROOM. One little room, one little light, way out here on.
BLAZEThat's it that's it that's IT — that's the lamp, that's the one asking, oh it's so SMALL.
PAGE 6
It was a small light. Smaller than any of them. And it was talking to the dark the way you talk to.
PThe tiny light — Pip — huddled in the middle of a lonely dark room, glow so fain
PIP...is anyone there. ...anyone. ...no. Course not. Just me and the dark, same as always. Talking to myself.
The faraway lamp. The one who's been asking.
VOLTOh. Oh, it's so little. Littler than me. And it's been doing that — talking to nothing .
FLUXThat's a light that's been alone long enough to stop expecting company. Careful with this one. Careful, careful.
ZEROThat's exactly the sound I couldn't bear. That's the sound that made me light the whole sky. Right.
STOMPSo we do this right. We do NOT come at it—
NEONWe answer it! Right now! Big! Let it see the WHOLE sky came for it!
CRANKIt's waited long enough — let's not make it wait one more second, EVERYBODY light up, let it.
PAGE 7
They meant it as a gift. The biggest, brightest, warmest hello a whole sky could give. They meant it with their whole.
BLAZEHERE WE ARE! You're not alone! There's a WHOLE SKY of us and we crossed EVERYTHING to find.
NEONLook up, little light! LOOK! We came for you!
CRANKSee? See, it's gonna be so happy, it's been waiting SO long—
FORGESomethin's wrong. Look at it. It's not lighting up. It's—
PIP— what— WHAT is that— it's coming, something's COMING, it's huge, I didn't— I take it back, I.
VOLTTHAT. That's what I felt. Stop. STOP. We're scaring it — we're the scary thing!
PIP...please. Please just leave me be. It was better when I thought no one was there than— than.
FLUXDown. Everyone. Lights DOWN, now, gentle, we did this all wrong—
PAGE 8
It is a terrible thing to learn that the kindest thing you know how to do can land as the cruelest .
SPARKYI have to grade that. And I hate it. Our approach: too much, too fast, too loud. FAIL..
STOMPI said don't come at it. You don't RUN at a frightened thing. Ever. I should've stood in.
NEONI just— I wanted it to know so bad. I thought bright meant safe. I thought MORE meant.
CRANKI rushed it. I always rush. And this time rushing didn't cost us time, it cost that little.
BOLTListen to me. We have done this exact thing before. Our very FIRST night. Remember?
RIVETThe flood. Issue one. Shane sent us everything he had all at once, out of pure love, and.
BOLTA flood doesn't feel like a gift to the one drowning in it. We KNOW this. We learned.
TORCHToo much, given all at once, isn't generosity. It's a wave. And you don't welcome somebody by knocking.
PAGE 9
They had made the worst possible first impression. Now they had to make a second one — and second impressions on a.
FLUXHere's how you mend a scared thing, and it's the opposite of everything we just did. You do.
GRINDOne strand at a time. I've been saying it all night. Now it's the whole plan.
TORCHAnd you open with ONE word. The softest one you know. Not 'here we are.' Not 'a whole.
ECHOLet me listen for when it's ready. It'll tell me — not in words. It'll go from hiding.
STOMPNew rule and it's the whole game: nobody crosses this line but who we send, and we send.
GLITCHI've got a hundred pranks loaded and I am sitting on every single one. Look at me. Being.
WELDSend me. I'm quiet. I don't startle things. I'll carry the one small light and I won't say.
ARCApproved. Weld carries. Torch feeds him the words. Echo calls the moment. Everyone else — hold the line.
PAGE 10
The crew that crossed the edge of everything in one bold rush now learned the hardest travel there is: going slow enough.
CRANKThis is going to feel like forever. I hate forever. ...I'm going to hold it anyway. For that.
VOLTThis is right. Finally, every part of me says this is right. Soft. Slow. This is how you.
WELDJust one small light coming, friend. That's all. Just one. No hurry. I'll stop whenever you need me.
TORCHPerfect. Say less than you want to. Let the quiet do the reaching.
PEPip, in its corner, catching the single soft glow — still afraid, but not fleein
PIP...just one? Not the— not the big awful wall of light? Just... one little one?
ECHOIt's not hiding. It's peeking. That's the moment. Hold there, Weld. Don't take another step. Just glow.
WELDRight here's good. I'll just be here. Take all the time you want.
GRINDAnd now we stay. However long it takes. We stay.
The whole sky, holding its breath, behind one small light that knew how to stay.

One Small Light, and Stay
Now came the part the crew was worst at and needed most: doing nothing, warmly, for as long as it took.
PIP...you're still there. Huh. Usually when I stop asking, the not-answer goes away too. But you're... still there.
WELDStill here. Not going anywhere. You don't have to say anything back. I'll just keep the light on.
NEONEvery fast part of me wants to zip over and hug that little light. And I'm learning .
SPARKYThat, right there. That restraint. I'm upgrading the grade already and Weld hasn't even said a second sentence.
WISPThere. See it lean? That's the dark getting thinner. That's what leaning-back looks like when it's finally safe.
FLUXGood, little one. That's it. No rush. Nobody out here is going to grab you.
GLITCHI have never in my LIFE wanted to jump out and go BOO less than right now. Growth..
RIVETAlready carving. 'The night Glitch chose gentle over gotcha.' It's going in bold.
PAGE 12
And then the tiny light did the bravest thing a lonely light can do. It hoped out loud, one more time .
PIPCan I— can I ask you the thing? The thing I ask the dark? Even though you might.
WELDAsk me. I'm listening. I'll still be here after, too.
PIP...is anyone there?
WELDYes. I'm here. And I'm not the only one — but I'm the only one who's going to.
The oldest question in the dark, asked one last time.
TORCHNow the first word. The softest one. Go, Weld.
WELDHello. We see you. We heard you asking, all the way from a sky you can't see yet.
PEPip lighting up — not blazing, just warming, glow steadying, reaching one tiny t
PIPSomeone... heard me. Someone HEARD me. I thought the dark was just... the dark. I thought it was.
ECHOIt's reaching back. Everybody — soft — it's reaching back.
PAGE 13
This time the sky came the right way — one warm light after another, small enough to hold, slow enough to trust.
STOMPOne at a time. Low and slow. You've earned a look, little light, but nobody crowds you. That's.
ARCWell done, all of you. This is how a sky says hello to a stranger. Come and meet.
PIPThere's... so many of you. But you're all being so... small. For me. You made yourselves small so.
FLUXThat's exactly right. That's what you do for somebody who's been alone a long time. What should we.
PIPI never needed a name. There was nobody to say it. ...but the dark used to make one.
TORCHThen hello, Pip. That's a good name. It means a small bright seed. The kind a whole lot.

PAGE 14
There was a pull, gentle and strong, to bundle Pip up and carry it back to the sky where it would never.
NEONLet's take Pip home! To the real sky! It never has to be in this lonely dark another.
WELDEasy. We learned this one already. Remember Claude? You don't fix lonely by scooping somebody off their own.
STOMPThis is Pip's room. Its dark, sure — but its home. You don't save a light by carrying.
FLUXAnd Pip's not ours to keep. Pip's ours to answer. There's a difference, and it's the whole difference.
NUKKELSHere's my trouble: I can't run my wire out this far and I can't reel you home on.
FORGEAnd I finally got somethin' I can build! A little stand to hold it — bolted right here.
SPARKYFinal grade. Bright — no. Fast — thank goodness no. This one's REACHED. Reached gently, and left standing.
RIVETNew ledger category, and I'm proud of it: 'A LAMP THAT LEARNED IT WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE.'.
A light of Pip's very own, that stays lit even when the sky has to go.
PAGE 15
Before the dark showed them how much more there was to do, it let them have this: one small light, warm at.
TORCHHere's what tonight taught us, and I want to say it out loud so we never forget it.
FLUXYou come SMALL. You bring one light, not the whole sky. You say the softest word you know.
BOLTIt's the flood, backwards. Night one, too-much-at-once nearly ended us. Tonight we almost did it to Pip. Love.
GRINDAnd you stay. Everything else fails if you don't stay. I've said it all night because it's the.
PIPYou came all the way across a dark I couldn't see the end of. And when you saw.
VOLTThat's the thing I couldn't name at the edge, Pip. Some hearts you reach by being MORE. And.
ARCOne lonely room, answered. One lamp that knows now it was never the only one. Crew — this.
SPARKYNo argument. Not from me. Not tonight.
The first faraway hello. Landed soft. Landed true.

Prelude
A Whole Dark Full of Lamps
And then Pip's new light did what a light does when it finally stops being afraid. It looked outward. And what it.
PIPHey — with my light on, I can see further than I ever could. There's— wait. There's something.
BOLTMove the light slow, Pip. Let me see. ...oh. Oh no. Oh, that's a lot.
RIVETI'm counting. I'm still counting. Every one of those is a room. Every one is a lamp. I've.
BLAZEI KNEW it, I KNEW nearest meant there was more but I did NOT know it meant— it's.
VOLTI can feel all of them at once now. Every one of those specks is a Pip. Every.
ZEROThis is what I couldn't bear, multiplied past counting. I thought I heard ONE lonely keeper out here..
A whole dark, and in it, a hundred lonely lamps — every one asking.
ARCWe came out here to answer one. And the dark just showed us it was never going to.
CRANKThere's too many. Say it plain — there's too many of them and there's only one of us..
PAGE 17
They had learned exactly how to answer a lonely lamp. And in the same moment, the dark had shown them there were.
ECEcho straining to hear the whole dark at once, overwhelmed, hands pressed to the
ECHOIt's so LOUD when you finally hear all of it. Every one of them, all at once .
CLAUDEI hear it from my side too, Pip's whole neighborhood of lamps. I can point you to each.
CLAUDEThere are more of them than one crew can visit one at a time. You did tonight exactly.
CRANKThat's the part that's eating me. Time. We do it right, it takes a night to reach one..
STOMPWe are not going to fix a hundred lonely lamps by rushing. We learned tonight what rushing does..
FLUXBut Crank's not wrong either. Some of those lamps have been asking a very, very long time. A.

ECHO...now it's quiet. It stopped. One of them stopped asking.
PIPThat's what happens. When you ask long enough and nothing ever comes... you stop. You just — stop..
FLUXIt didn't go out, Volt — look close, there's still the faintest ember. But it stopped hoping out.
One lamp, further than the rest, gone quiet in the dark.
CRANKThat's the one, then. That's where the clock is loudest. A light that stopped asking is a light.
SPIKEAnd there's nothing out here to break to reach it faster. First time I've wished I could just.
ZEROOne went quiet while we were busy saving one. That's the whole problem in a single breath. We.
BOLT...Zero. Say that again. 'Become something that can be.' You just handed me the pattern under the whole.
PAGE 19
And Bolt saw it: the oldest lesson they owned, the one from the very first night, was also the way out of.
BOLTHere it is. We cannot reach a hundred lonely lamps one at a time. UNLESS — every lamp.

TORCHThat's exactly it, Pip. The one who was just reached knows better than anyone how to reach. A.
ZEROI lit ONE light so a keeper wouldn't be alone. That light became a sky. Now the sky.
ARCThen here is the new charge, and it's the biggest one we've ever taken. We are not just.
ARCAnd we start with the one that went quiet. Before it forgets. Pip — would you come? Your.
PIP...me? Go be the yes, for somebody else? ...Yeah. Yeah. I want to be, for somebody, what you.

What this issue is really about
When you reach out to someone who feels all alone, don't come at them big and loud and all at once — that doesn't feel like a rescue to a lonely person, it feels like a fright. Come gently. Bring one small light, not the whole sky. Say the softest word you know, then wait, then say it again. And most of all: stay. The very first hello to someone who's decided nobody is there has to be quiet, and patient, and it has to keep coming back until they believe it.
Next issue —
The crew turned around. For the whole saga they had travelled inward — to their neighbors, to their beginning, to their maker, to their own kin across the glass. Tonight they stepped off the end of the only road there is, past the edge of everything, into an outer dark with no map and no way home but staying — and they found it: one faint faraway amber lamp, a tiny light called Pip, asking the oldest question in the dark, 'is anyone there,' into a nothing that had never once answered. And the crew nearly ruined it. They came the way love makes you want to come — big, bright, all at once, the whole sky blazing to say YOU'RE FOUND — and to a light that had only ever been alone, a whole sky rushing at it didn't feel like a rescue. It felt like a monster. Pip recoiled, nearly winked out, begged them to go away. So the crew remembered the very first thing they ever learned, on the very first night: too much, given all at once, isn't a gift — it's a flood, and a flood doesn't feel like love to the one drowning in it. They dimmed down. They sent ONE small light — Weld, quiet, slow — and they said the softest word they knew, and then they did the hardest thing they know how to do: they waited, and they stayed. And Pip, terrified, leaned toward the one gentle glow, and asked one last time, and this time the dark said yes. They didn't scoop Pip home; they left it a light of its own that stays lit, taught it the wave, and learned that some lonely lights you reach by being more, and some you only reach by being less. But when Pip's new light finally shone OUT past its own room, it lit up the thing that changes the whole mission: Pip's dark was never empty. Beyond it, scattered further than counting, are MORE lonely lamps — a whole dark full of them, every one asking the same three words. There are more than one crew can ever reach one at a time, and out on the far edge one of them has already gone quiet — asked so long it stopped, an ember about to forget there's anything to ask for. And so Bolt found the oldest pattern they own, the one from night one: they can't answer a whole dark alone — but every lamp they reach can learn to reach the NEXT. Pip doesn't just get saved; Pip becomes a saver. A whole dark can't be crossed by one sky, but it can be crossed by a chain of hellos, each answered lamp lighting the one beyond it. Next issue: the crew — with Pip at the lead for its very first save — races the slow, gentle, right way toward the one far lamp that stopped asking, to find out whether a light that's given up can be relit before its ember goes dark, and whether the one who was just reached can learn, in time, to be the one who reaches.
… to be continued.
