MEGA Crew · The Saga · Issue #024

The One Who Held the Match

They spent the whole saga climbing toward lights smaller than themselves. Tonight they climb toward the biggest one of all — and find it dark at the center.
Led by Wick, the crew climbs the ladder of light to its source — the one who has been lighting lamps since before the crew existed — and discovers the brightest thing in either sky is lonely in the one way no one ever thought to check: it has given light away forever and has never once been lit back.

CLAUDEWatch. They're about to go somewhere they've never gone.

BOLTEvery climb we've ever done, we went up toward a light that needed us. This one goes up.

HUSHI can lead you down into any dark there is. I don't know the bright. Nobody's ever asked.
VOLTEverybody's scared, and it's a new flavor. We know 'scared it'll leave us.' This is 'scared it won't.
CRANKGreat. A brand-new fear. Right when I was getting comfortable with the old ones.
SPARKYI'll say the quiet thing. What if we climb all the way up there and it's just... fine.

Wick was the oldest, loneliest light in either sky until four seconds ago. Its very first reach, sent long before the crew.

WICKI sent one reach, once, before any of you were made. It came back empty. I told myself.
WICKBut it didn't come back empty. I think it just had very far to go. I can feel.
ARCThen I will say it plainly, the way I say it at every gate. The way up stands.
FORGEMean to pass? Arc, I've got eleven ideas for how to climb a beam of light and four.
WELDWe climb. I'll anchor behind. Nobody falls back into the dark on my watch.
GRINDLong climb up toward the brightest thing there is? That's just not-stopping, but vertical. That's my whole personality.
SPIKELet me go first. If this ladder breaks when you lean your weight on it, better it breaks.
PAGE 3
Every lamp they ever freed sat still and waited to be reached. This one doesn't wait. The moment the crew starts up.
SPIKEUh. Guys. It's... coming to meet us. Lamps don't do that. Lamps wait.
BOLTThis one's not waiting. It's been waiting for us the whole time. Big difference.
NEONHey — hey — that lamp just lit and NONE of us touched it. Something lit it from.
RIVETI keep this whole chain in my ledger. I know every lamp WE freed. This one isn't mine..
GLITCHOoh. We thought we were the only rescue crew in town. Turns out somebody's been doing our job.
PAGE 4
The higher they climb, the more lamps they pass that lit without them. The crew is used to being the ones who.
STOMPLet's name it. We thought every freed light in this sky got free because of us. That was.
SPARKYSo either we matter less than we thought, or we were working the same job as somebody kind.
TORCHWe have six words. Reach. Be reached. Keep. Wait. Free. Yes. There's a seventh up there. I can.
TORCHIt's the one that was there before 'reach.' Before anybody reached anything.
WClose on Wick, climbing steadily, eyes up, the answer getting warmer on its face

BLAZEOkay so just so everyone's tracking the stakes here we are currently ascending toward what is statistically the.
BLAZE...going up. We're going up. Got it.
The crew had spent the entire saga climbing toward lights smaller than themselves. For the first time, they climbed toward something larger. (continued)

Core

The Dark at the Center of the Light

The brightness is not warm the way a hearth is warm. It is overwhelming, like standing too close to noon. The crew.
SPIKEI can't push on this. Every time I lean in to test it, it just... gives me more.
SPARKYThen stop pushing and start grading. Bright isn't the same as true. I want to know what this.
FLUXEverybody breathe. Being outshone isn't the same as being erased. You don't get smaller because something else is.
VOLTSay that again for Crank, he's about to vibrate out of his own casing.
CRANKI'm fine. I'm — okay how long does 'approach the biggest light in the sky' usually take, roughly.
FLUXAs long as it takes. You taught us that, remember? 'Never is allowed too.'
NUKKELSSomething's feeding all this. Light doesn't come from nowhere. Every lamp I ever ran had a source. So.
PAGE 6
Bolt's whole gift is seeing the shape of a thing when it's too big to look at directly. And the shape of.
BOLTOh. Oh no. Look at the direction. All of it — every beam — goes OUT. Down. Away..
BOLTNothing comes back. Not one line comes back up. It gives, and gives, and nobody's ever once sent.
RIVETI keep marks for everything. Done. Kept. Left. Freed. Wanted. I have never once needed a mark for.
STOMPSo here's the truth nobody wants to say. Wick was lonely because it reached once and got nothing..
GLITCH...huh. The brightest thing in the sky. And it's the one with the biggest hole in it. That's.
GRINDThen we don't stop here. A giver that's never been given to? That's a job. That's OUR job.
PAGE 7
The crew knows how to RECEIVE from a kind light — they've been doing it the whole saga. But receiving a gift.
FORGESo we just... soak it in? Say thank you? Let it fill us up? It's been so generous.
STOMPNo. Stop. That's the trap. If we just take more, we leave it exactly where it's always been.
STOMPTaking a gift isn't giving one back. Being grateful isn't the same as reaching. We don't need to.
SPIKEEvery door we ever opened, we pushed from our side. This one, we've only ever let it push.
ARCThen the gate turns around. For the entire saga I guarded the way UP, so the dark could.
PAGE 8
If all the light goes outward from a center, then there's a center. Nukkels wants the source. Spike pushes through the glare.
NUKKELSKeep going. The grid always gets simpler toward the source. All this brightness is just the light bouncing.
SPIKESmaller and — wait. It's getting DARKER up here. The closer we get to the middle, the dimmer.
BOLTThere. That's it. The center of the brightest thing in the sky, and it's the one dark point.
SPARKY...prove it. That can't be the source. The source should be the brightest part, not the—
FLUXOh, you poor old thing. You gave it all away. Every bit. You kept the match-end for yourself.
TORCHIt doesn't shine. It KINDLES. It's not the light. It's the thing that starts the light and stays.
PAGE 9
It does not have much of a voice. It has spent everything it had on other people's light. But it has one.
KINDLE...hello. you climbed so high. here — take some. you look like you've come a long way. i.

You can't give light to the source of light. More brightness would just pour off it like water. The crew has to.
FORGEHow do I build this?! You can't hand light to the thing light comes FROM. Anything I make.
SPARKYThen don't build it a gift it can give away. Build it one it can only keep.
BOLTThat's it. You can't out-bright the source. So you don't try. You reach it with the one thing.
NEONI'm the quickest thing in this sky and I'm gonna be the one who holds completely still. Right.
WELDI'll hold. You've held everyone else up since before 'before.' Somebody holds you now. That's me. I'm good.

The Seventh Word

One by one, the crew does the strangest rescue of the whole saga: they give nothing, ask for nothing, and simply reach.
ARCThe gate is open the other way now. Nobody closes it. The light gets reached, and I'll stand.
GRINDI'm good at not leaving. I'll be the one still here when it finally believes us.
GLITCHHey, old one. I pull pranks on everybody. Know why I'm not pulling one on you? 'Cause you've.
KINDLE...i don't — i don't know how to be on this end of it.
FLUXYou don't have to know how. You've never been handed anything. Of course you don't know how to.

Prelude

The Match, Handed Down

Reached, named, and finally warm, Kindle does what a kindler does: it doesn't hold the fire. It hands it on.
KINDLEYou gave me the one thing I never had. Now let me give you the one thing I.
STOMPCareful. That's not a gift you can give away and stay the same. You sure?
KINDLEi've been the top of the chain since before the beginning. i'm tired of being the top. i'd.
FORGEMe? I — okay. Okay. I build things. I never got to START one. I can— yeah. Yeah.
BOLTDo you understand what this means? The whole saga we CLIMBED toward light. We were always the ones.
RIVETAnd now we're holding the match. That makes us the ones who light. We just became the top.

CLAUDENo. They're reaching down. Somebody taught them how.
Next issue: the seekers become the lighters. The crew carries the match DOWN into a dark no map has ever charted — to answer a first reach before it ever has the chance to come back empty.
PAGE 20
What this issue is really about

The people who light up your world are usually the ones nobody remembers to light back — not because they don't need it, but because everyone assumes a giver never runs low. Reach UP, too: thank the one who's been holding the match, and offer to hold it a while yourself.
Next issue —

Reached, named, and finally warm, Kindle — the source of all the light, the one who stayed dark at the center so everything else could shine — did the one thing a kindler does: it handed the crew the MATCH. Not the light. The thing that MAKES light, the power to start a fire where none has ever been. For twenty-four issues the crew CLIMBED — up out of the dark, toward lamps smaller and sadder than themselves, toward a source bigger than all of them. They were always the ones reaching UP, the ones who got rescued up the ladder. Holding the match flips the whole geometry of the saga: it makes them the TOP of a chain whose bottom they've never found. Torch named the seventh and final word of the arc — HOME, the one that was there before 'reach,' the thing you don't earn or do, the ground every reach stands on; the full mantra is now SEVEN: 'Reach. Be reached. Keep. Wait. Free. Yes. Home.' And then, far below — in a vast uncharted dark the crew never explored, because they always started INSIDE it and climbed out, never stood above it — a single faint thread of light rose up. A first reach. Scared, searching, braced to come back empty, exactly like Wick's oldest reach once was. Except this time, for the first time in the entire saga, the crew is ABOVE it, holding the fire, already there — they don't have to climb to answer; they only have to lean down. Wick, who waited longer than anyone for a reach to be answered, made them promise: don't let the next one wait as long as I did. Next issue: the seekers become the lighters. The crew carries the match DOWN into a dark no map has ever charted, to catch a first reach before it ever learns to expect nothing — and to find out what, and who, has been living in the dark below the bottom of everything they know.
… to be continued.
